Sourcing Advanced Control Components

Basic control tech components can get the job done at a lower cost but sometimes sacrifice efficiency, functionality, and ease of use. As companies are looking to get more out of their machines over time, incorporating more advanced control components may serve you better in the long run.

Industrial joysticks and potentiometers work together to provide motion control technology in a wide range of industries, but how do you know which type of component is best for your application? Here are a few key differences to consider when you’re designing your motion control solutions.

Triple- or Quad-Axes vs. Single-Axis Joysticks

Single-axis joysticks are an economical and easy-to-use component. They’re a reliable option for machines that require control of one function. With a variety of handle styles, mounting styles, and micro-switch and detent options, they can meet a wide range of specifications. However, when you want to add more functionality to your machinery, there are better options.

Triple-axes joysticks have X & Y axis handle deflection, but also incorporate a vertical rocker potentiometer to enable a Z-axis. They move as needed in each direction and utilize the potentiometer’s range for maximum sensitivity. This means your controller can be programmed to do more things, making it a great investment in the long run. You can also customize handle and pushbutton options as well as spring return or position hold. These durable components are immune to vibrations and can be adapted for Hall Effect or resistive control.

Quad-axes joysticks can be utilized to add even more purpose and efficiency to your heavy equipment. With multi-directional functionality, they offer precise motion control for a vast array of machinery. Hall Effect potentiometers, see-saw potentiometers, and a dual output option for all axes make these controllers reliable and accurate. When you need a high-performance solution for harsh work environments, these are a great option because of their ability to withstand dirt, hot or cold temperatures, vibration, and more.

Traditional Pots vs. Contactless Pots

Potentiometers have been the go-to position sensor for decades due to their affordability, ease of use, and wide availability. When used in the right environment, they can provide accurate measurements with relatively few problems. However, when you need motion sensors for harsh environments, you need a more advanced control component.

Contactless pots, such as the Hall Effect potentiometer, can be used in work environments where dirt, vibration, or extreme temperatures are a factor. They are widely used in agriculture, mining, automotive, construction, and food and beverage machinery for that reason. When you need reliable feedback over a long period of time, these components will deliver regardless of pollutants.
