Draw Wire Sensors (String Potentiometers)
Draw-wire sensors, also called cable transducers or string pots, are low-cost and compact solutions for accurate measuring of an object’s mechanical position. Core components of a draw wire sensor are a precision measuring wire and a sensor element (e.g. potentiometer or encoder), which convert the path change into a proportional electrical signal. P3 Americas range of industrial draw wire sensors are capable of measuring displacements from 50 millimeters up to 42 meters. Draw-wire sensors utilize a flexible cable, a spring-loaded spool, and a sensor to precisely measure linear position. They do not need precise linear guidance and are ideal for wet, dirty, or otherwise harsh operating environments.
There are several advantages to employing these devices.
- They are easily customized
- They are ideal for difficult positions
- They offer high operational safety
- They have a long service life
- They offer both analog and digital outputs
- They are allow for easy, fast and flexible mounting
